Torrevieja has become the first city in Europe to install an innovative "smart traffic light" designed to protect pedestrians crossing while looking at their cell phones. This light device, placed on the ground right at the traffic light-regulated crosswalk, displays the image of a pedestrian illuminating red or green, matching the color of the traffic light.
The main innovation of this system is that it is positioned within view of pedestrians looking at their phones, a practice that causes numerous scares and accidents every day, as many pedestrians fail to look up to check whether the light is red or green. This installation, which aims to increase road safety, aims to draw the attention of cell phone users at the precise moment they are about to cross.
The device, in addition to its practical utility, will soon be presented at the INTERTRAFFIC Mobility and Road Safety Fair, being held in Amsterdam.
