Elche strengthens its road safety with a comprehensive maintenance and renovation plan for horizontal and vertical signage.

The Elche City Council has launched an ambitious road safety improvement plan through a service contract focused on the maintenance, replacement, and installation of new road signs throughout the municipality. The project is organized into two distinct lots: Lot 1, related to road markings (horizontal signage), and Lot 2, corresponding to vertical signage, which also includes state-of-the-art electronic devices.
Lot 1 includes the maintenance and renovation of roadway markings, including pedestrian crossings, lane lines, horizontal priority signs, bicycle symbols, parking areas, among other elements. This intervention seeks to ensure the visibility and clarity of road markings, which are essential for the safe circulation of vehicles and pedestrians.
As for Lot 2, in addition to the installation, maintenance, and replacement of traditional vertical signs—such as speed limits, mandatory directions, and hazard warnings—the City Council has incorporated new electronic signage elements, with a clear focus on smart and sustainable mobility. These devices include educational radars, which inform drivers in real time about their speed, with the aim of encouraging responsible driving without imposing penalties. Likewise, Bicycle Safety Assist (BSA) has been installed, an innovative system that detects the presence of cyclists in specific areas and activates illuminated signals to warn drivers, thereby improving coexistence and safety between vehicles and bicycle lane users.
The work is being carried out progressively, prioritizing high-traffic areas and those where greater wear and tear has been detected or where signage needs to be updated.
